Slow Shudder unravels memories and possibilities in her shimmering, emotionally charged new single, “Time Now for Ghosts”.

Created during lockdown, “Time Now for Ghosts” was inspired by unusually vivid dreams that sparked introspection about past relationships that never felt fully resolved.

“Living through a time when it’s difficult not to be fearful about the present and the future, I’ve found a lot of solace unpacking what I do have a better grasp on - my memories,” shares Slow Shudder.

“Until recent months, like many others, I haven’t had much time in my adult life to take a deep look at so many of my ‘ghosts’, of which I mean elements of my subconscious,” she reveals.

“When lockdown went into effect, I began having daily dreams about the first person I romantically loved, who unexpectedly passed away just over four years ago, as well as other people in my life with whom I was previously involved. I recognized that there were a lot of unprocessed emotions there, which I’d compartmentalized over the years instead of fully accepting and feeling,” she adds.

“Throughout this time, I was reading 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami, which explores the concept of parallel realities. The song title 'Time Now for Ghosts' is a line from the book that struck a chord with me, as it made me think of a concept within physics: quantum entanglement, described by Einstein as ‘spooky action at a distance’,” she continues.

The lyrics begin by describing a moment of feeling two places at once: present with someone physically, yet emotionally distanced and lost in thought. By the second verse, those places have switched. Now physically distanced, there is an increased emotional connection.

“It’s interesting to think about the concept of entanglement within the framework of relationships and memory. Obviously, when writing, I was considering it less from a particle physics standpoint and more as a thought experiment, based in emotion - I suppose you could call it an emotion experiment,” she laughs.

Completely self-produced, mixed and mastered, “Time Now for Ghosts” displays the full force of Slow Shudder’s technical prowess. Sonically, it combines ear-catching melodic hooks with sweeping synth layers and energetic percussive patterns, finding equal reference points within 2020’s wave of hyperpop artists, such as Hannah Diamond and A.G. Cook, as it does to early 2000s electronic pop artists such as The Postal Service and Imogen Heap.
